My name is Jean, I was born in 1943, the approximate middle of WW2. It has always held a facination for me and indeed led me to take up a career as a history teacher. My mother worked in munitions in Birmingham until I was born and my father was fighting overseas with the 2nd battalion Scots Guards. We lived in a North east coastal town and it was extensively bombed as it had a port. They are still digging up unexploded bombs. Last year we were all evacuated from my area as one was found at the bottom of the street whilst digging some foundations, and another was found a mile away this february. During the conflict my family was bombed out of three houses, each time moving in with another relative. We ended the war living 14 people in a two up two down house of a great aunt with no bath and a midden at the bottom of the garden. My great love is the music and films/documentaries of the time which I collect. I have one film in which my father appeared as an extra. The soldiers from Wellington barracks were hired by the film company and paid 5 shillings per day for their efforts, as a soldiers pay was 5 shillings per week after his wife was sent her allowance, the pay was riches indeed. I would like to find anyone who knew my father as he died aged only 50 in 1965. His name was James P Jackson. If any one knows who I could contact with his details to attempt to find any ex comrades I would be grateful for the information. Other than that I have some very funny stories of incidents during the war, as I am sure have others so if anyone would like to chat, please do.
