I was 13 years old and at school when the war started. When it finished I was aged 19 and serving with the Royal Artillery in India, where I stayed during partition of the country in July 1947, leaving eventually in October of that year.
I had an aunt and uncle killed in an air raid on Birmingham in November 1940, a week after the devastating raid on Coventry. My father was a fireman in the NFS and previously was a rescue worker during the air raids on Midland cities. I was also a NFS messenger boy in the 12 months before I was called up into the army.
