I am the son of a farmer. I was born in 1925 in Somerset and raised on the farm in Dorset. I volunteered in 1942 but did not start training until March 1943. I was selected by a WOSB and sent for pre OCTU training to Blackdown and thence to Sandhurst graduating, I think, in July 1944. I was posted as a 2nd Lt to the 141 RAC (The Buffs) in August; my first operation, if it can be called such, was the attack on LeHavre. I remained with C Squadron until the end of the war. Within a few weeks of the end of the war younger troops were returned to England for retraining for the war in the East.
In transit for India the atomic bombs were dropped and many troopship passengers were disembarked in Egypt. I was fortunate and seconded to 2nd Mech Regiment of the Arab Legion spending two eventful years under the overall command of Glubb Pasha.
Demobilized in 1947 I emigrated to Canada and in 1948 joined the Lord Strathcona's Horse (RC) retiring as a Major in 1974.
Looking for new fields I studied law at the University of Ottawa graduating in 1977 and being called to the Bar of Ontario in 1979. I practiced law in various fields until 1991.
