I was born in the wick in 1937. We had a small Cycle shop andIwent to Gainsborough Road school unyil 1948 when i moved on to Parmiters in Bethnal Green.WW2 was the main constituent of our lives We lived through it and we played games about it. There was the army camp in the park ,the Big A A guns out on Hackney Marshes.The gaps in the houses from the Blitz and the later big devastated areas cuased by flying bombs and V2,s.
At the back of our shop was the railway and at night a large gun would be trundled up and down making an awful noise as part of London's defences.
Who was around? Cyril Aris in the white lion,Harry Thirkettle in the forge ,Larby The fishmonger,Farinas sweet shopand many other businesses trying to survive .
Families? the Knowles's,the strutts, the atkins's
the Peppiats.
Many more people went to church then St Mary of Eton which also housed a police station for the duration.The vicar was father Hoey ,very popular.
