I was born at 14 Grove Road Gosport and lived there throughout the war years. I have an older sister and brother who were born in the mid-late 20s. Also two younger sisters born during the war.
My father was, at that time, in the Royal Marines and located at Eastney Barracks, Portsmouth. Close by our house in Grove Road was HMS St Vincent, a naval training establishment, an oil storage tank farm for supplying fuel for naval vessels and northwards to Hardway was a large naval armanents establishment and a fire training school. Hardway had a hardened beach and piers where vehicles and troops embarked ( and disembarked) for the DDay Operations. Much of this traffic moving right past my front door. Several months after DDay I started school at Grove Road Infant School. Being in the midst of all this activity and being too young at the time to take it all in, that, in later years this period has been of great interest to me and the few clear memories I have of that time were seen through my eyes alone.
