I have always been fascinated by history. WW2 being such a massive part of world History holds so many incredible individual stories. I have heard tales from both my own Grandparents and my wife's that I simply cannot comprehend. I want my children to know who they were and what they had to live through in order for us to exist.
My Grandfather lied about his age and joined the Navy. He served on MTB's for a while. He volunteered for a Navy Commando unit under combined operations. Like a lot of veterans he has trouble talking about his experiences. My Grandmother was a civilian working in London. She drove a cart with two shire horses collecting scrap from bomb sites (all 5ft of her).
My wifes grandparents where interned in Shanghai as civilians. Her Grandfather was British and grandmother Russian. My wifes mother was born in captivity. Again her Grandmother never spoke too much about her experiences. She has stated that J.G.Ballards "Empire of the Sun" was bull*$#! (her words not mine). She has always expressed how well the Japanese treated her when she gave birth in a Shanghai hospital. Although she does mention expressing milk for other mothers who couldnt produce enough milk for their own children and eating infested buck wheat.
I feel a bit of a fraud telling their stories because they are not my own. I do believe they should be passed on if only to teach us about our own lives and how lucky we are.
If any of these stories ring a bell I'd like to hear from you.
