World War 2 was my childhood. The two most evocative sounds of my childhood are Plain Chant -as a Catholic I spent many hours in church, and the air raid warning. For me this was an exciting, not a frightening sound. It meant the disruption of routine, of school lessons, of bedtime.
World War 1 was ancient history. My father who fought at Gallipoli would talk about it sometimes. It was years before I understood and admired him for his part in the war.
