Following service on the China station, Wyndham Fletcher's father, Lt Cdr Walter Fletcher, was commanding the destroyer HMS Defender based at Chatham at the outbreak of World War I. He soon saw action in the Heligoland Bight engagement and was credited with picking up the first German survivors of the war. Walter was invalided out of the Navy and died in 1917. His widow Dorothy married again, to William Miskin of Great Chart and moved into Bodsham Lodge in 1919. She died in 1984 aged 100. Two of Wyndham's three brothers were killed in action. Here is Wyndham's story; this was contributed by James Nichols.
