I am from Leeds and joined the Territorial Army, RAMC, 146 Field Ambulance, at Harewood Barracks, Woodhouse Lane, Leeds, on 2nd May 1938.
I was mobilised 17th August 1939.
On the morning war was declared, on the morning of 3rd September 1939, I was a corporal and was supervising the filling of sandbags outside the Parochial Hall, Bennet Road, Headingley, Leeds.
From this moment I served in many places, Norway, Orkney Islands, Edingburgh Castle, Bedford, Market Warsop, Salisbury Plain and Bowhill (Selkirkshire),it was here where I transferred to 3rd Infantry Division and where we did training for the Normandy Landings.
I landed with the 2nd Batt Lincolnshire Regt. on Sword Beach around midday,6th June 1944, D-day.
The Division fought in every battle ending in Bremen in May 1945. We then went to Egypt, where I was promoted to sergeant, and Palestine from where I was demobbed in 1946.
