I joined the ATS in 1939, it was just after the war started and most of my friends were doing similar things, it was just what everyone took for granted, there was a war on so everyone pitched in. I did mostly clerical work and it was actually quite interesting as I had to write up reports from soldiers who were just returning from the war. There was never anything secret or anything but in some ways it was good because it was like a window into the lives of some of the men who were fighting. Even though we weren't actually in the fighting we still felt like we were very much a part of the war espescially when the bombings became more frequent as it really scared an awful lot of people. The Baedeckers raids in York were one of the most scary times for me because I had made a lot of friends and I was forver worried about them, I couldn't really help much at all but I still helped out wherever I could. I remember hearing about two of my friends who lived next door to each other, there houses were bombed and some how both of them managed to come out completely unscathed, I think it must have brought them closer together because they ended up getting married. Even though the bombings were to put a real downer on life we still made sure that we enjoyed ourselves, every friday when we went on our mandatory training which consisted of a 3 mile walk we always somehow ended up going to a pub to help us get over it. It was just an excuse to forget about the troubles that were going on and enjoy yourself really. There was also a local hanut of all the airmen which me and my friends often went down to, it was Bettys bar and they used to have all the airmen in each week. It was really enjoyable espescially as there was so many different nationalitie there were Americans, Canadians, Belgians and Frenchmen as well. I met one Frenchman who my parents liked so much that they wanted me to marry him but that was because his parents were supposedly well off and had their own perfume farm. Even though I never married him it was truly brilliant to have met such amazing people and in a way if not for the war I wouldn't have met him or any of the others. Near the end of the war something happened which was to change my life forever, I was to recieve a promotion in the ATS, it made my Aunt Ethel a bit upset because she wanted the promotion as well but I ended up getting it because I was single and was willing to move about. When the war eventually ended I was sent to German to work in an office there this changed my life because it was there that I met my future husband and we were to spend many happy years together.
