I trained as a wireless operator and joined the 23rd Infantry Brigade Signals Section in the Western Desert. I've written an account of my time there, "The First Time I Spoke French to a Frenchman". I was also at the seige of Tobruk, the Libyan fortress besieged by the Germans in 1941, about which I've written an account, "24 Hours".
