my fathers Regiment was the royal engineers.
name.william george smith.army No,1985488.enlisted army reserve 1938,called up.01-09-1939. because he was a dockworker(parkeston quay harwich)his army trade was dock checker. he went to france with the B.E.F came out on a coal barge some where near ARROMANCHES at the time of dunkirk,rejoined his unit at SOUTHAMPTON,then went to COATBRIDGE&POLLOCK(GLASGOW)SCOTLAND.getting ready to go with 1st army for thelanding in north AFRICA.came backto ENGLAND to prepare for D,day he went out on the mulberry harbour,b.portc.m.d.t(this was stamped in his pay book.
at this time he was batman to a col.M.R.HADDOCK.O.B.E.their unit went all the way up thecoast reopening theports all the way up to HAMBURG.GERMANY.i do know the colonel became REGIONAL PORT CONTROLLER.ALSTERECK,HAMBURG.attd.8.basesub area B.A.O.R i think at the time my father helped to run the officers mess.he was mentioned in despatches,re.no m/a.OA37521.my father would say little about the war that is why im trying to find his units. bill smith.
