I was a Liverpool Policeman whe WW2 broke out, served throughout the Merseyside Blitz
and was then called up. I volunteered for the Army Commandos ( at that time there were no Royal Marine Commandos) and joined 3 Commando. I served In Gibraltar, North Africa and sailed from the Red Sea for Sicily In June 43. Did two Landings during the Invasion of Sicily, one on the 9th July 43 and the second on the 13th/14th to capture a bridge, eight miles behind the German Lines. After removing the demolition charges from
under this bridge, during which we were engaged in a ferocious battle, we had to withdraw and were eventually captured. I was then locked uo in Campos 66 and 73 before being transferred to Stalag 18A for the rest of the war. Went on one of those Marches into God knows where and finally left and made my way, along with three others to the American Lines, were there was lashings of food but we could not eat it. Ah.
