When I was taken to Talbot Green in Llantrisant I didn't go with a group as I was only four years of age. Talbot Green infants school made up little Christmas Stockings for the evacuee children and were very welcoming. The daughter of the couple I was billeted with was Gwen and she was 14. I was there for four years without seeing anyone from my family. They were the happiest of years and when I went back to Stockwell I was broken hearted. My mother was a stranger, I had a sister who was one year old, but still no father and I missed my "family" in Wales desperatly.
I think this must have happened to many children. They didn't quite know who they belonged to. I had gone through all the childhood ailments with my Welsh family and they had become vital to my wellbeing then suddenly the link was cut as my own mother was obviously fearful that she was no longer all important.
My mother is still alive but I have not seen her for 43 years and I am sure the root cause happened all those years ago.
