My name is Mandy Chester. I am 31 yrs old, and i have had an interest in the second world war since my teenage years. My Grandad, Henry Crawford was in the second world war attached to the 1st Battalion Green Howards Yorkshire Regiment he was 31 when he enlisted in 1940. i did`nt know this while he was alive so therefore could`nt question him i decided to try and look into my grandads past to try and get to know a little about the great and quiet man i was to young to know, so i set about questioning the family and got a little information that i could use to get me started. I wrote to the ministry of defence and got his details such as his army number, which regiment he was attached to, where his overseas service was etc. I got stuck as i could`nt really find out what the 1st Battalion Green Howards did in the second world war other than a little info about Italy. There were also a few details of a rescue my grandad did, it was said that he saved a soilders life after he was injured on a land mine, where, when and how i don`t know, i hope someone out there will have some details they may be willing to let me have. I will keep plodding away and hopefully build up my Grandads life.
