I was an ATC cadetin 2069 Sqdn in SPONDON Derbyshire & had met Frank walker-smith. He was a hero to both we cadets & the people of our village. It was such a tragic loss that he survived fights against huge enemy forces,& then just after a well deserved promotion to pilot officer, and marriage to his fiance, he was killed in an horrific accident, when flying as a passenger. After his death a memorial was placed in our local church. It was only in 2000 I decided to research his battle of britain actions
This took a year & I was able to write his story
using verbatim details from copies of his own handwritten & signed Combat Reports, and this was published in DERBY EVENING TELEGRAPH, in 2001, as
a Tribute to him exactly on the 60th anniversary
anniversary of his death.I finally visited his Grave at Saffron Walden, & Maria my Granddaughter
laid flowers on his grave.I would love to hear anything about 85 Sqdn & pictures for 1940/41
