I was born and brought up in Leeds, but now live in Scotland. In October 1942 I had my 18th birthday. By then there was conscription for women,so to avoid being "called up" I volunteered for the ATS which I joined on 5th May 1943. I trained at Queen Ethelburga's School in Harrogate and after 4 weeks was sent to the Isle of Man for 6 months training as a Special Wireless Operator 'Y'Group Royal Corps of Signals. After training I went back to Harrogate to work at Forest Moor Intercept Station. In 1944 I moved from Queen Ethelburger's to Hildebrande Barracks when the American Hospital moved out. In 1946 I was transferred to Beaumanor in Loughborough and was eventually de-mobbed from there. I met my husband at Harrogate and we married in 1947.
