i was born in 1930 in luton, beds and lived in a two up,two down terraced(50 joined together)house in hampton road.i went to dunstable road school next to browns timber yard where in the playground at playtime the girls used to play a snake like game and sing a song called the big ship sailed through the alee alee oop.i listen to the children at playtime now in the school not far from where i live and that pre-war memory floods back.when we came home from school we would sometimes, instead of climbing "the bank" (a big piece of ground thirty foot high that was the site of the odeon cinemalater in the thirties)turn left up hazelbury cresent and run down the alley along the side of the football ground.i recall one wednesday ? we were all shouting midnight sun because some one had told us that that had won the derby.we used to cross oak road and pinnocks was the shop on the corner of the alley.mr pinnock was a big man (to us) and he used to store bikes in his back yard for tuppence on match days.
