My step-mother was interned in France when she was ten years old. Her father was a Brit who returned to the U.K. shortly after the second world war started. Because her father was British she was immediately classified as an enemy to the Third Reich. After being released from the internment camp she escaped with her family to south of the line of demarcation and from there proceeded with her mother and sister across Europe to Gibraltar and from there to England where she stayed throughout the war. Details of her flight are sketchy in places owing to her age now and at the time. Her sister was considerably younger and her mother has just recently died but was long past remembering details by the time I got to know her. Her story will, in all likelihood, echo the experiences of many others.
