I became interested in WWII when I began investigating my family history. My parents were both children through the war years and my mother was evacuated to Lancashire. My father stayed behined in his home town of South Shields as his father James was a Merchant Seaman. James Allen served on the Doric Star and was sunk by the German war ship the Graf Spee in December 1939. All the crew survived and he later joined the SS Afon Towy. He died on 06/08/1941 when the Afon Towy and five other ships were lost in heavy weather on Haisbro Sands off the Norfolk coast. As far as I know his body was never recovered and he is remembered at the Merchant Seamans memorial at Tower Hill London.
I have little information on the SS Afon Towy and my Grandfather apart from a couple of photographs. If there is anyone out there who has any information I would be glad to here from you.
G Allen
