Having visited Italy with my wife in 1997 on a nostalgic trip to the area where I had served with 250 squadron, I met up with a gentleman who had been a Pilot with the Italian Air Force, who had been shot down in 1941, and taken prisoner, then transported to the USA, until Italy came out of the war, when he was repatriated.
On his arrival back to his home village (Mortegliano, in north east Italy), he was employed on 239 wing, of which 250 was part. I rememered this gentleman, who in 1997 was acting as interpreter for the local Sindaco (Mayor), and the local Italian Air Force Association. We were given a wonderful reception and given a tour of the locality where I had served with 250.
It was a very nostalgic visit, which prompted me to endeavour to form the 250 Sudan Squadron Association. It was not too long before one or two former members of 250 made contact following various adverts that I had placed. As numbers grew, it was very apparant that we were spread all across the country, and age groups in the 70's and in some cases 80's, so the means of contact was fairly limited, and emerged that we rely on newsletters, which I endeavour to produce on a monthly basis, having started at number 1, I have just sent out number 73 - the content for these newsletters being mainly members memoirs which I have encouraged them to jot down as and when something enters the old grey matter.
We now have some very interesting stories and photographs which go a long way in building up the history of 250 Sudan Squadron which I intend will never be forgotten.
I will give some background as to how and when the squadron was formed, then introduce in some kind of order the personal memories of individuals.
As this unfolds, I am advised that it is better suited to be firstly posted to the database, which will then bemade available on viewers pages.
This I will do - so watch this space.
