I enlisted in the T.A. at Caister on 3 July 1940 and, after three months in Cambridgeshire doing medical work and unloading railway wagons, I went to Church Stretton for training in the Royal Army Medical Corps before a posting to the 1st Armoured Division, which was based in Surrey to defend London against invasion; then Brecon Beacons, Craven Arms, and Chester in a variety of units including a light field ambulance, casualty reception station, the Army School of Hygiene (where I volunteered as a "guinea-pig" for the development of a 'flu vaccine) , Royal Herbert Hospital and HQ Western Command. Finally I went to Leeds before embarkation at Liverpool aboard "Stirling Castle" at the beginning of 1944.
