My name is Monica and I live in the North West of England. I was born in 1944 to a white English mother, and a black American soldier father whom I never met.

Theirs` was a brief war time romance similar to thousands of others which took place between people of different nationalities during the dark days of WW2. People were displaced and lives were interrupted often with lifelong consequences.

Britain was at war with Germany and the American/Canadian army were in the UK in to train in prepararation for the allied invasion of France.

My father was stationed at an American army camp in Huyton, Liverpool, Lancashire from 1942/1945. The Huyton camp was occupied by black/coloured troops (African-Americans) and was a section attached to the main Burtonwood Base at Warrington Lancs, a few miles away. My father was a truckdriver who hauled supplies between Liverpool Docks and other American camps around the North West. He and Mother met at a dance hall in nearby Prescot, Lancashire in 1943.

There were many children born in similar circumstances to mine and I would love to hear from any of these who would like to contact me.

I tried many times to trace my biological father as I grew up, but always without success until last year (2002) when I finally managed through the internet to trace him and his american family. Sadly he had died in 1994.

I am in now contact with his family in the US and it has been a most rewarding journey unraveling my missing past. I have at last found some answers to my many questions and finally know a little about my fathers identity and my empty past.
