Imagine follows British/Bangladeshi choreographer Akram Khan as he collaborates with Oscar-winning actress Juliette Binoche to produce an ambitious work of dance-theatre: 'In I' - a piece which will premier at the National Theatre in September.
Binoche has never danced before and Akram will be pushing her to reach a professional standard for the performance. At the same time, he will be developing his own acting skills and learning to play the guitar.
The film will be made up of interviews and exclusive behind the scenes footage combined with films of classical Kathak dancing and some of Khan's early pieces and performances.
Imagine also follows Khan's company as they work with The National Ballet of China on 'Bahok'. Not for the first time, Khan joins forces with Mercury Award winning composer Nitin Sawhney. They are bringing together a new company of eight dancers from different cultures, traditions and dance backgrounds. Imagine follows the journey of their production.
Binoche and Sawhney are not the choreographer's first collaborations. Previous alliances have included Kylie Minogue, Anthony Gormley, Hanif Kureishi and artist/sculptor Anish Kapoor. The film will include clips from Sacred Monsters, Khan's recent piece with prima ballerina Sylvie Guillem and Zero Degrees with Flemish-Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.
Included in the film will be Interviews with Binoche, Guillem, Kureishi, Gormley, Kapoor and Sawhney, and we hear from his friend Joseph Fiennes; artist Darvish Fakhr - who is painting Khan for the National Portrait Gallery; Khan's family; producer Farooq Chaudhry; and his mentors and students.
