There is a sense of excitement that I can't really put my finger on as we load up the black sports car with cold lager and head down to the port to pick up Art Brut, I haven't seen them for the best part of the worst two months of my life and the sight of approaching friendly faces across the customs hall in "The Zeus" Paul "Tidy" Summers battered Mercedes tour bus. "Kasabian fans didnt get it but they were never supposed to" | Jimmy Savage |
Suddenly it screaches to a halt and I can make out the look of amazement on Pauls face as the "Dixon of Dock Green" Guernsey customers play the big man at him "Have you got any drugs on you sir?" he turns to ask the band, they say "No" and then drive through, snail crawl the Zeus up to the Fermain Tavern, a local venue to do a gig with Limefire, the jenerators and ..............and the night society suffice to say that it was the first time I had joined Art Brut for backing vocals for ages but I was so slammed I don't remember it, I think my amp is still there. We got back to my sister and her boyfriends house and made a mess, then, at **** o'clock in the morning we boarded the Condor Ferry for Jersey, all feeling "Crushed by Ale". Checked into the hotel , saw the guys from the bravery got told a long story about someone going up to the drummer from the bravery and saying "Arent you in the Killers" him sayin "No" and then that person replying "Sorry, IT WAS AN HONEST MISTAKE", nice joke, not sure if its true though, I never called Grahame Coxon, Damon but legend has it I did. On to Jersey Chilled out then jumped in the van and got to outside the festival site, got met by a gentleman who informed us that we couldn't put the van backstage, though whoa hang on, what the **K. But they hauled the stuff, up. Wondered about , Eddie got mobbed a lot. Saw the Black Velvets, apparently the drummer wouldn't lend his stool to a local band as it was "his throne" move over W Axle Rose. They dressed like surfers who frequent topshop and a have bass player whos mum had been doing Jack Blacks dad.
They put on a great show mind, and were prize entertainment at the hotel after the gig, yes guys the beer is stronger in the Channel Island, I made that mistake the other week. "My little brother just discovered drink and drugs, and jacuzzis" Then came the future heads, who I had seen months before at FROG and thought were boring. They were ** great this time. O oo O oo O oo fabulous great show crowd loved it fabulous gig played all the hits and a few more besides, really enjoyed it hionestkly proffesional tight and loud........ Nepatism begins at home but Art Brut stole the show for the whole day. The kids loved it the adults loved it, the Kasabian fans didnt get it but they were never supposed to, from my little brother to rusted guns of milan and starting with Welcome to the Jungle by Guns and Roses, why? Why f**king not. The kids threw socks on stage and a beach ball and they went mental and people stared and shouted TOTP. Didnt see all of the bravery, sounded a bit boring, like a poor mans killers really, quote of the day about Jersey, " Its a bit like a cross between England and France but with better looking women," A fair sumuppence as far as I am concerned, it was just like that. Nice lights! I went to the dance bit to see 2manyDJ's they were f**king awesome, mixing song 2 with the prodigy and a bit of Dolly Parton, I wasnt quite pasted enough for it really and I was a bit hot in my silly jacket, so we walked down passed Kasabian, the NME review was all about Kasabian so this one won't be. Kasabian are very good at what the Happy Mondays did better, but they are better looking and not quite as rock and roll. Great show though lots of smoke and lights and Obi Wan and The Wookey up front shined through, they can sing better than Shaun Rider and Ian Brown but I dont think that people will make a film about them in 10 years time staring Steve Coogan, top people great band, just not my thing really but 10 zillion Dido/ Coldplay fans can't be wrong, this CD will play from every renault megan in suburbia till David Gray puts a new one out.. Jersey live was a damn good day out with eclectic bands to please everyone, it has one fault, it needs to be two days long and have twice the numbers of bands, the security guards need changing too. Amazing fun, festivals are totally brilliant I love them anyway but this one was close to my place of birth kind so it was nice to get to go and be a part of it, just wish I had seen more of the local bands. It was great to meet all you nice folks! Jersey Live 2006 TOTP Jimmy Savage
