Branchage festival kicks off

The 2008 Branchage film festival is underway and its brought an icon of the 20s with it.

The Speigeltent

The headline for this feature was very nearly ‘a tent like no other’ but I decided that it didn’t really tell you what was going on.

Which is why I went with the much more sensible ‘Branchage festival kicks off’, mainly because – well the festival starts tonight.

The centre piece of the inaugural Branchage Jersey International Film Festival is a tent on the Weighbridge – specifically a tent on the Petanque Courts on the Weighbridge.

The Speigeltent

But this isn’t any ordinary tent – oh no – this isn’t a piece of fabric threaded through a pole and hammered into the ground by a fed up parent on a pointless camping holiday – this is made of wood.

Actually it’s made of more than just wood – the Spiegeltent, hub of the Branchage film festival, is built from wood, mirrors, canvas, leaded glass and is detailed in velvet and brocade.

This tent has been touring fairgrounds and festivals since the 1920s, is the last of the Belgian Speigeltents and is now simply known as – The Famous Spiegeltent!

As you approach it from the outside – walking towards Weighbridge Square from town it looks like a wooden cabin – a small, relatively simple façade that almost resembles a saloon bar on a Western Movie.

The Speigeltent

But this is a set that, instead of housing Billy the Kid and his poker playing buddies is hiding a palace of glamour and cool – a forum for the full flavour of festival fun.

This venue will be the main point of contact for the festival, it plays host to a well known local coffee bar, a cocktail bar and there’s even free WiFi.

The Speigeltent is open to the public and is free to get in throughout the day. Just go down to the Weighbridge between 7am and 7pm between now and Sunday – even if it’s just to stand amidst the spectacular surroundings of a 1920s icon.
