What next?

Excavation on such a scale would obviously be impractical, and there are doubts about the accuracy of aerial photography, a technique often used in such investigations. The Wroxeter Project has instead turned to the most up-to-date, non-destructive technology in its quest to accurately map the site - from gradiometry, which measures minute changes in the Earth's magnetic fields, to receptivity, which uses electric currents passed through the soil.

Thanks to these techniques, they have been able to reach some startling conclusions without disturbing any earth. For example, it has been possible to chart the progress of a great fire which swept through the city at its height, and the street system has now been largely mapped.

However, this project need not be confined to the ivory towers of academia. There are opportunities for ordinary people to get involved too. The team is experimenting with innovative ways of conveying their findings to the public, in the hope of attracting local volunteers - fancy dipping your toe in the archaeological water?
