Making light work of wine

However, de Godeton and his fellow wine lovers also had to reckon with the might of the Catholic Church. It transpired that the wine had belonged to the religious community of Livers, in Piccardy. They lodged a complaint against de Codeton to the Vatican, and a harsh verdict was handed down.

Walter de Godeton had to pay penance. He was ordered to build, on the downs above the scene of the disaster, a lighthouse to warn ships of the dangers. He was also ordered to build an oratory for a priest to say masses for the souls of those lost at sea. Walter de Codeton completed his building works by 1328.

Henry VIII's breakaway from the Catholic Church in 1534 and the suppression of the chantries and religious guilds in 1547 changed everything. He closed the oratory down, so the lighthouse fell into disrepair.

Over time, the oratory became a ruin through continued theft of stones by islanders, and by 1575, it was nothing but a shepherd's shelter. But the lighthouse tower still remains as testimony to the monk's worthy duties.

After 300 years of the St Catherine's headland being left without any warning light, Trinity House, the UK's lighthouse authority (constituted by Royal Charter in 1514), started to erect a new pharos.

It is only the shell of this that remains close to the Pepper Pot lighthouse. It was never completed. The present-day lighthouse on the point was commissioned in 1840 and is still operational today.
