For over a hundred years men had been leaving the Mirpur area to find work. Most people were involved in farming, but as pressure on land increased many went south and found work in the ports of Bombay, and then on the ships themselves. Ex-seaman Choudry Qasim Ali joined the British Merchant Navy and first sailed to London in 1921.
