Those who came to work in Britain would send back remittances to support the families they had left behind. In many cases the money was accompanied by equally tempting, and often embellished, accounts of life in Britain. By local standards the migrants appeared to be wealthy, and any negative stories that made their way back were ignored or quickly forgotten.
