By their very nature, legends are highly romanticised and a long way from the truth, but regardless of this they can still be of use to the historian, revealing something about the time in which they were written, or acting as a window into the mindset of a particular generation. The story of Gautier de la Salle, one of the most "ill-founded" legends in Guernsey, is a case in point. Examining records from the time, the legend seems to bear little relation to actual events; however, it is still useful in revealing the state of affairs in 14th Century Guernsey, and the popular mind-set of the time.
