Odo of Bayeux is one of the most unpopular characters in the history of Kent. The half-brother of William the Conqueror, he is not such a household name as his sibling, yet he too had a primary role in the conquest and subsequent domination of England.
Odo’s tyrannical behaviour created resentment and unrest across the country, and nowhere was his hand more keenly felt than in Kent, where he became Earl. William put his half-brother in control of this strategic position in order to help him secure his new kingdom, but Odo’s repression and land-grabbing soon drove the county into open revolt.
