Sarah Wilson was born in a Staffordshire village in 1754, the daughter of a bailiff. Sent to London to look for work, she became a maid to Miss Caroline Vernon, a lady-in-waiting to the German-born Queen Charlotte, and so began an eventful 'career', which eventually saw Sarah transported to America where she posed as Queen Charlotte's exiled sister!
