Where is St Cuthbert buried? |

Cuthbert, monk, hermit and Bishop of Lindisfarne, died on 20 March 687. Eleven years after his death the monks went to dig up the body, to translate it into the fine new shrine inside the church, and found, to their astonishment, that his body was incorrupt. Bede, the first English historian, said that Cuthbert was more like a sleeping than a dead man.
Those who worship in Durham Cathedral and most of the half a million people who visit each year, including the late Cardinal Hume, firmly believe that the body of St Cuthbert lies behind the high altar in the great Norman Cathedral, where he has lain for 900 years. Some people, however, still hold to the legend, that his body was spirited away at the time of the dissolution of the Priory of Durham under the instructions of Henry VIII. Just where does his body lie, and is it still incorrupt?
