For hundreds of years, Jerseymen made a living from the sea. In the 18th and 19th Centuries, Jersey merchants established a commercial stronghold in Canada and grew rich from their control of cod fisheries. Generations of young Jerseymen left their homes to travel across the Atlantic to work in this industry. Some made fortunes, some stayed poor, and some eventually met with financial ruin.
The trade has gone, the companies have disappeared, the shipyards are built over, but occasional clues to a nearly-forgotten industry may be found by looking at the fine houses Jersey merchants built for themselves.
