The Lancaster - Kendal Canal was actually diverted to pick up the gunpowder trade, for the Sedgewick and Gatebeck companies and the incoming raw materials. This diversion involved the construction of the 378yd. Hincaster canal tunnel which was designed by J. Rennie and completed in 1819
