Mechanisation and Northampton’s shoemakers |
|
The transition from workshop to factory was strongly resisted by Northampton’s shoemakers, who were proud of their craftsmanship and keen to retain their autonomous working practises. But however stubbornly opposed, the encroachment of mechanisation was inevitable. The 1857-9 dispute between the town’s shoemakers and manufacturers was the beginning of a transition period which saw the end of large-scale hand-making techniques in favour of machine produced shoes.
