I worked a 8 and a half hour day five days a week and sometimes Saturday from 7.30 till 12.00 which amounted to a 46.5 hour week! There was approx 100 females worked in my dept which was the sorting & counting dept. My job was to count and sort reems of paper. I enjoyed the company and the friendship of my work colleagues but i did not enjoy the work itself, it was very heavy and you also got a lot of nasty cuts of the paper.
I walked to work everyday which was about 1.5 miles from my house due to there being no other transport. My first pay packet was £3 and five shilling which was weekly and the average pay at that time. It was very dirty fsactory and cold in the winter. It was also a dangerous place to work. We had to stand on 6ft steps with no safety equipment and there was often accidents in the factory.
I met my husband at the mill and we are still together 40 year later. The factory closed in 1971 and now classified as a green belt area.
