Your Story: I was 21 in 1969

St Lawrence, the hospital was blocks of three floors, with walk ways between the top floor and middle floors all wards were locked , all nurses had keys to the front and back doors incase of emergency's and to keep patients safe. I was a state registered mental nurse as the hospital was so big the work force was also large, I would say that it was three quarters female and one quarter male, our wages were paid monthly I can't remember exactly but between one hundred and one hundred and twenty pounds per month.

There was a nursery for staff children open 24 hours for all different shifts that we did, I did permenent nights, which were four nights a week. Patients were not allowed to mix only on social nights. The wards were female and male wards. The only wards that were mixed was the childrens wards, we worked very hard in those days.

We also did cleaning of window sills, lockers, bathrooms and kitchens. All the wards were forty bedded with one nurse and somebody to help you put patients to bed and to get them up washed and dressed in the morning ready for the day staff.
