Work
Your Story: Student Days

My first year's student pay was £2.10 shillings £2.50 to date (in modern money) not very much! The average for a tradesman in the early 1950s was £5 per week. The hours were long with split shifts from 7.30am until 9pm. Today nurses get extra pay for weekends and night shifts and Bank Holidays, we got nothing extra for working unsuitable hours. The work on the wards was tiring, hard and demanding. It was satisfying seeing patients improved and cured of their illness going home, some were not so lucky.

After 3 year's training I was a qualified registered nurse. After working at the hospital for 4 years I gave up nursing and left the R.V.I for good. Not having much money during my student days I could not afford very much. Nurses today are much better paid than we were 50 years ago. On my 21st birthday I was working when I got home I got a nice surprise, a nice wristwatch from my late my late mother. This story was collected by Lauren from her grandad Sydney.
