Work
Certificate of Discharge for Ryan's grandfather, William Walker, on the 10 June 1950
Your Story: Betty Walker

My Grandads story from when he was 21. I interviewed my Grandad about what he was like at 21.

I started fishing on the trawlers when I was 18. Then I went in to the Merchant Navy when I was 20 but I was very ill and the captain on the boat did not think I would survive. Then I went into hospital in Venice for six months because I had T.B. I got a train back to London it was called the Orient Express. I got to the train by a taxi boat but from London I went to Hadrian Hospital on the Coast Road. This was where he met my Granma who also had T.B. Then he had his operation at the Wooler Sanatorium Hospital.(It took part of his lung out and 7 ribs) He recovered very slowly but when he recovered he looked for a new job and went on a traing course.

I liked doing this because I learned a lot about my Gran and Granda.
