Your Story: Mrs Margret Brammer, Nana |
|
She got a job from a friend of her father's. She didn't need to have any qualifications, just an interview with the manager, called Mr. Vasey. My nana worked on her own in the sweet kiosk, but she had work mates called Owen Douglass and Florence Dixon. Owen worked in a projection box, while Florence worked as an usherette. She worked eight hours a day, although sometimes it was tiring, depending on how busy the cinema was. My nana was paid £30 a week, but it was a fair wage at that time. My nana paid board to her parents then she could spend the rest on clothes, etc. My nana liked her job because she liked talking to the public and making friends. She liked everything in the cinema. So did all the kids, because there were no videos or cameras.
My nana's job was far from her house, so she walked to the cinema, although she was never late. She had to wear the cinema's uniform which was a nylon cream overall and a white apron.
I think I've learnt a lot about my nana's life when she was young. I enjoyed talking to her about her jobs.
