12 new deacons for Barking area

12 new Church of England curates were created, when The Right Reverend John Gladwin, The Bishop of Chelmsford, ordained twelve men and women from the Barking Episcopal Area.

The Barking Episcopal Area includes five east London Boroughs: Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Newham, Redbridge and Waltham Forest, together with Epping Forest, Harlow and Ongar in West Essex. It鈥檚 one of the largest and most multi-cultural areas in England.

Who's who

From left to right the new deacons are as follows:

Ken Ashton; Sally Lynch; The Venerable Elwin Cockett, Archdeacon of West Ham; Bridget de Mello; Gill Anderson; Emeka Ejinkoyne; Rt Revd John Gladwin, The Bishop of Chelmsford; Rt Revd David Hawkins, The Bishop of Barking; Geoffrey Eze; William Obedoza; Shaun Moore; Andy Poultney; Sheila Fernandes; Lyn Hillier; Neil Walsh and The Venerable Peter Taylor, Archdeacon of Harlow.

The Church of England says this diversity has not always been reflected among Church of England clergy.听 But this year is different, with the new curates reflecting a mix of cultures and traditions.听 The Bishop of Barking, The Right Reverend David Hawkins said he was thrilled:

鈥淭his area is so rich in it鈥檚 mix of culture and traditions and I am delighted that this is beginning to be reflected in the backgrounds of these twelve new curates.

Within the group there is a good balance of gender, of theological tradition and of ethnicity that reflects the communities they will be living and working in."

"Within the group there is a good balance of gender... and of ethnicity that reflects the communities they will be living and working in"

The Bishop of Barking, Rt Rev David Hawkins

He continued "Equally importantly, this group reflects the whole spectrum of the Church of England and that is very healthy and exciting.

It鈥檚 a clear demonstration of the continuing relevance of the church and of Jesus Christ, to people of all backgrounds and traditions.鈥澨

The church needs change as other faiths in the UK are getting bigger and undoubtedly will take over, at this time ill leave. But unless there鈥檚 change in all ways numbers will dwindle and the church will fall. But the church must be in fall charge of the changes and the faith. The C of E let an African church take over the church behind our house we now have to live with constant noise that we can here over our telly from 100 feet away if there鈥檚 a garden party we have to leave the house. Some oap鈥檚 that complained were fretend by the younger church users. 4 roads of houses backing onto the church took them to the council about the noise we were called racist by the council for complaining about a black church. My moral is change yes but be very careful who is aloud in and what they are aloud to do as some of these new people look a bit like they come from where the new church people come from and they have ruined that church with their changes.
