LIV/MAN
Part 1+2 - Laurence Lane
Manchester Art Gallery and Walker Gallery, Liverpool updated 29/06/04
Manchester
based artist Laurence Lane spent two years gathering opinions on the
streets of Manchester and Liverpool about how people they view the
other city.
The
result is a new aural artwork called LIV/MAN Part 1+2 that
can be heard at Manchester Art Gallery and the Walker, Liverpool.
Lane says, "I've been living in Manchester for 15 years and
I'm aware of the relationship between the two cities. Particular
at the moment where the North West region is being branded as one
place. So in some ways they have to co-operate.
But
there is a mythical under lying rivalry between the two cities.
I was interested to find out about that in a very overt way so I
went out and asked them what they thought."

LIV/MAN
Part 1 at Manchester Art Gallery features recordings of people on
the streets of Liverpool talking about their impressions of Manchester.
Meanwhile in Liverpool visitors can hear what people here in Manchester
think about their city.
"The
thing about asking Liverpudlians about Manchester is that they immediately
know that it is a question they can consider answering," say
Lane. "They know there's a relationship between the two cities
and that there has been for decades."
