The fund is to help Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow, 37, who won eight Grand Finals, three World Club Challenges and two Challenge Cups in 17 years with the Super League side.

The money will support his treatment and his wife and three young children.

The online appeal, which was launched by the Leeds Rugby Foundation after he was recently diagnosed with the disease, passed the £200,000 landmark at the weekend.

Over 9,000 donors have so far contributed to the fund.

Kevin Sinfield, director of rugby at Leeds Rhinos, said: "The outpouring of support since the announcement has been incredible and shows why the game of Rugby League is so special."

The South Yorkshire Flood Disaster Relief Appeal was established after widespread flooding across the county in November.

It's already raised more than £500,000 and has begun to distribute cash payments to affected households.

The government said it would match funds raised by the appeal on a pound-for-pound basis up to £1m.

The appeal's begun making initial £200 payments towards clean-up costs and repairs to all flood-hit residents.

Sheffield's City Mayor Dan Jarvis had called on the government to provide significant financial support to the region.

The announcement comes after the Prince of Wales visited affected areas in South Yorkshire on 23 December.

  4. Calendar Girl Angela Knowles 'honoured' by MBEpublished at 09:55 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2019

The woman from North Yorkshire behind a nude calendar which raised millions for charity says she's "honoured" to have been appointed MBE in the New Year Honours.

    Angela Knowles

Angela Knowles, 74, from Linton near Skipton, and 10 Women's Institute friends, posed for the calendar in 1999 to raise £5,000 for charity.

It went on to raise almost £6m and inspire the Calendar Girls film.

Mrs Knowles said she believed the honour was recognition for all the women who took part in the calendar.

"I am really honoured. It's not just for me it's for all of the calendar girls and our photographer. We've been a great team for over 20 years," she said.
