  1. Queen's Baton Relay heads to the North East this summerpublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 11 May 2022

    North East towns and cities will be on the route for the Queen's Baton relay leading up to the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

    The baton will arrive in the region on 14 July and visit Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Redcar, Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees, Darlington, Durham, Seaham and Sunderland.

    On 15 July It will pass through South Shields, Whitley Bay, Alnwick, Gateshead and Newcastle.

    The baton ends its at Birmingham's Aston Hall on 28 July, the day of the games' opening ceremony.

    This is the final stage of a tour of the 72 nations of the Commonwealth.

    Two men are in hospital with life threatening injuries after the car they were in crashed in Hetton-le-Hole, police said.

    Emergency services were called to North Road at about 02:30 on Saturday.

    Sgt Craig Bartle. of Northumbria Police, said: “Two men are fighting for their lives as a result of this incident and we are determined to find out exactly what happened.

    “I am therefore asking anybody who was travelling in that area early on Saturday morning to think about whether they saw a black Skoda, or anything that may be of interest to us."

    The black Skoda Octavia was the only vehicle involved.
