Passengers were trapped in frosty carriages overnight after a broken-down train caused tailbacks on the rest of the tracks.
The 4:30pm service from Cardiff to Bournemouth was stuck at Christchurch, Dorset, until about 8am this morning.
Shane White, who was on the train, said "apparently one train near Christchurch has welded itself to the track trying to move".
"They have been trying all night to come up with a solution but trains have ran out of battery power etc, there was some rain that has frozen points and other electrical connections, with all the roads blocked and vehicle snowed in there is no road transport available," he added.

Holyhead Marina has taken a bit of a battering during last night's weather.
The RNLI says it had to move its all weather lifeboat to a safer berth in the inner harbour area.
"There is considerable damage and disruption at the marina, so for now we will stay berthed within the inner harbour, ready to respond (slower than usual, but able) to a shout," a spokesman said.

Greatest drifts in the Vale of Glamorgan
St Athan had the deepest overnight snow in the UK with 51cm (20 in), according to the Met Office.
Bryn Bach Park in Tredegar was the second coldest place in the UK overnight, behind Baltasound in Shetland, with -5.5 degrees centigrade at 04:00 GMT
