State-owned media in Somalia say government forces have killed at least 30 al-Shabab militants near Jamaame, south of the capital city Mogadishu.
At least 10 insurgents were captured in what is said to have been a highly co-ordinated operation in villages around the town and along the River Jubba.
The mission is said to have been carried out with regional forces from Jubaland.
Operations against al-Shabab have intensified in southern Somalia where the al-Qaeda linked militants control many rural areas.

Reports from Cameroon say 17 people will stand trial for the kidnap and murder last year of the popular radio journalist, Martinez Zogo.
Court papers seen by several media outlets are said to name suspects including a former head of the secret service and Jean-Pierre Amougou Belinga - an influential businessman arrested two weeks after the killing.
Martinez Zogo was an outspoken critic of corruption. He had accused Mr Belinga of graft.
The journalist was abducted in front of a police station outside the capital, Yaoundé.
His badly mutilated corpse was found days later.

Energy rich nations including Russia, Qatar, Iran, and Venezuela have signed two key partnership agreements at the end of a major summit in Algeria.
They will work with Africa's energy commission and East Asia's economic research institute to promote sustainable development and improve energy security.
Leaders from more than 10 gas exporting nations attended the summit.
Algeria's President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, said the forum was determined to expand the use of natural gas.
The 20 nations that make up the exporters forum hold more than 70% of the world's natural gas reserves.
Algeria is already Europe's second-biggest pipeline supplier.

Hundreds of protesters in the Senegalese capital Dakar have called for elections to be held before the end of President Macky Sall's term on 2 April.
Mr Sall sparked huge protests when he postponed last month's elections and failed to announce a new date.
On Saturday, protesters from opposition parties and campaigning groups called the president a dictator and demanded the release from prison of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko.
Delegates taking part in political crisis talks last week, which were organised by the president but boycotted by the opposition, recommended holding elections in June.

The headquarters of the main opposition party in Chad, is being demolished, two days after its leader Yaya Dillo was killed.
A large excavator was seen demolishing the three-story building and heavily armed soldiers cordoned off the area with armoured vehicles.
Earlier, the Socialist Party Without Borders (PSF) said Dillo was executed by soldiers who shot him a point blank range.
The military junta said he was killed during an exchange of gunfire after staging an attack on the country's security agency. He denied any links to the alleged attack.
Dillo was buried by his family on Thursday.
There remains a large military presence on the streets of the capital, N'Djamena.
The shooting came amid tensions ahead of elections announced for May.
