The ´óÏó´«Ã½'s Paul Blake and Laura Bicker report from the British Virgin Islands, where Hurricane Irma's force has destroyed communities and left at least five people dead.

The flight into the island of Tortola should feature sweeping views of lush green hillsides and translucent-blue bays. Today it looks like the victim of a bomb blast.

On approach to the airport on Saturday, boats could be seen piled on top of one another like children's toys. Others laid lop-sided on dry ground or semi-submerged offshore.

At the main international airport, operations have ceased. Small, local aircraft are occasionally allowed to land in order to bring food and water, or to evacuate the critically ill.

Havana is currently a city without power. Electricity is out across the capital after Irma clipped the city on its route away from the Cuban coast and out towards Florida.

Residents have woken from a torrid night of howling winds and lashing rain to find trees felled, electricity posts down and flooding in areas near the sea. Thankfully however, no deaths or injuries have been reported.

The clean-up in the capital will take some time. But it is little in comparison to other towns and villages further along the coast which received the full force of Irma's strength.

Cubans are used to hurricanes and generally know how to respond to them. However few could have been fully prepared for a storm of this magnitude.
