Wales issues guide: Transport

Transport is one of the 20 devolved policy fields that the Welsh Assembly Government is responsible for.

It includes aspects of the rail and road network.

This is what the Conservatives, Labour, the Liberal Democrats and Plaid Cymru are promising to do for transport at this election.

  • Extend the free bus pass scheme to all armed forces - both serving and former - and all carers.
  • Work with the UK government to further electrify Welsh railways; focusing on the development of a business case for electrification to Swansea and the potential for electrification of the Valleys lines and the line from Cardiff to the Vale of Glamorgan.
  • Eliminate overspends within assembly government transport projects. Work to improve management and efficiency.
  • Work to establish a direct rail link between North Wales and Liverpool.
  • Prioritise the objectives of the National Transport Plan.
  • Improve the arrangements for integrated transport.
  • Continue to argue the case for electrification of the London-Swansea line through to Swansea.
  • Extend provision for cycle paths.
  • Complete the Wales coastal path.
  • Scrap the airlink between North and South Wales and prioritise green transport, including rail and bus travel.
  • Re-negotiate the whole Arriva Trains Wales contract to improve the quality of services.
  • Make the case for electrifying the Valleys Lines to begin in 2014, ensuring the right rolling stock is available.
  • Improve the coverage of bus routes in rural and poorer areas by re-regulating the buses, so that local authorities can ensure that all of their communities are served.
  • Improve rail services and ensure greater investment in the Welsh railways by creating a new not-for-distributable profit company to run the service.
  • Seek the devolution of funding of Network Rail to complete the electrification of line from London to Swansea; to electrify the Valleys Lines and to plan for the electrification of the North Wales coast line.
  • Maintain concessionary bus fares and overhaul existing bus provision in order to expand community services.
  • Improve the road network as outlined in the National Transport Plan.
  • Roll out the Sustainable Travel town initiative and increase proportion of Transport Budget spent on integrated public transport.
